During my 20 years in the trade I've managed to indulge myself now and again with the odd performance Ford and have worked my way through various XR's & RS's over the years, however having enjoyed those, I'd be eyeing up a Focus ST for a while, thinking they look a car that could be great fun and potentially a future classic, and hey presto, right on cue I took this in PX against a 190E 2.6 earlier this year. I've thoroughly enjoyed this car, but it comes with a tinge of sadness as I think these will be among the last of the proper Fast Fords, just like the XR's & RS's of old, this Focus ST-2 is both mad and practical in equal measure; this is something Ford have become masters of over the years; they take a run of the mill, rather good hatchback or saloon and make it into something very special. Powered by a Volvo sourced 2.5 litre, 5-Cylinder Turbo charged engine, this a seriously quick car! It’s finished in what I think is one of the best colours in the ST range; Performance Blue and with factory “ST” door stripes and black alloys, it looks the part too. What sets this car apart from the rest is its largely unmolested; there’s no daft blue hoses, ridiculous remaps or silly intercoolers, it’s as the Ford engineers intended it to be. If you’re looking for one of these future classics, you’ll very soon realise most of these cars have been messed about with, usually by wannabe tuners, which I think spoils their character. The Focus even in its everyday form has always been a great car to drive, but the ST-2 takes it to another level; it handles superbly and pulls like the proverbial train, all accompanied by the distinctive and charismatic 5 cylinder turbo soundtrack…think 1980’s Audi Quattro UR rally car and you won’t too be far off the mark; back in the 80's we used to stand in forests watching special stages of the RAC rally, during cold winter nights just to hear that sound of a 5 cylinder Quattro UR on full song...this Focus ST doesn't sound too much different from that! As I've said, many believe these are the Last of the "proper" Fast Fords, made before they the "environ-mentalists" came along and spoiled it all; it was then most manufactures, including Ford, switched to fitting big turbos to silly little engines, that near the red line sound like a dying housefly. As such I’m convinced these proper performance cars will be a sure fire future classic in the not so distant future, especially as there’s something so endearing about these Fast Fords; Even in 2024 as a 50’odd year old, they still make you feel like your’re 18 again. THE MTSV DIFFERENCE Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
