SUMMARY

This has to be one of motoring's best kept secrets! It looks like an Aston, handles like a go cart, but drinks like a Clio! I have to be honest, when I was asked if I wanted to take a Renault in PX for a car I sold recently, I wasn’t that keen to say the least, due to all the preconceptions I’ve had about Renault’s , much of it admittedly based on hearsay. When I think back, I’ve actually owned several Renaults in the early/mid 90’d, namely a couple of 21’s, a 19 and a 5 GT Turbo and my memories of all those were good ones,  so  I’ve probably been somewhat guilty of parroting what others have told me.


In any case I agreed to do the deal, and as I’d delivered the car, I had to drive this Laguna Coupe the 150 miles back home. Within just a mile, I was already questioning the preconceptions I had about Renaults, and after a further ten miles, mostly on twisty A-road, all those preconceptions were long forgotten, and I was heaping praise on the car. The rest of the journey was an absolute pleasure, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed. On arriving home, I checked the fuel computer, where I was surprised to see to see it was showing a very impressive average 55mpg despite my somewhat spirited driving at the start of the journey, and the high speed cruising on the motorway (it was late in the evening) 


This has got to be one of the best looking cars on the road, and from some angles it’s said the Laguna Coupe has a look of an Aston Martin about it, and if it wasn’t carrying the Renault badge, you’d think it something much more exotic and expensive.  The Coupe version of the Laguna Mk.3 was only produced for around 4 years, so it may bode well be a future classic, but not withstanding that, it’s such a refreshing change from the usual default Coupes that grace our road (dare I say the  MB  CLK, BMW 3 Series Coupe etc) I know I shouldn’t say it being an MB specialist, but I think it’s better looking than both!

The car is in lovely condition, and the drive experience as previously mentioned is amazing, yet in true French style very compliant and comfortable. Everything it has works, and it comes with two card keys. Service history is good too, with 8 stamps in the book, all in or around the 18,000 miles service interval. This Renault/Nissan developed2 .0 DCI (150BHP) engine runs a timing chain, so there are no belt worries. It also doesn’t have the complex four wheel steering found on larger engine models too, which at this age is a good thing, and DPF has also just been done too.

This beautiful car is priced at almost a third of the price of an equivalent CLK or 3-series Coupe, yet it’s certainly not one third of the car, and is a very intelligent choice for those wanting something a bit different, that stands out from the crowd, but in a good way. I was so impressed with this car, I very, very tempted to keep this as one of my own,  and I’m  even finding myself looking at other Renaults because of it, which hopefully tells you something!

Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that.
